May 1st is “First Responders Day” in Ontario.
Prince Edward-Hastings MPP Todd Smith celebrated the day honouring Police, Firefighters and Paramedics. Prizes were awarded to local school children who participated in a coloring and essay contest coordinated by his office and sponsored by the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
Smith was joined by Doug DeRabbie of IBC and local police officers, Acting Inspector Chris Barry of Belleville Police Service and Constable Yvonne Steele of Quinte West OPP, as he visited three local schools to announce the winners.
The winners of the colouring contest were Daniel Power (Grade-2) and Miah Hubble (Grade-3) of Sir John A MacDonald Public School in Belleville, who each won $50 gift cards, donated by IBC. The winners of the essay contests were Matthew Beal (Grade-6) of George Vanier School in Belleville and Julianne Wade (Grade-7) of St. Paul’s Secondary School in Trenton, who won iPad minis, which were also donated by IBC.
