Lyme Disease Petition

Lyme Disease Treatment

TO the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

WHEREAS, the tick-borne illness known as Chronic Lyme Disease, which mimics many catastrophic illnesses, such as Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn’s, Alzheimer’s, arthritic diabetes, depression, Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia is increasingly endemic in Canada, but scientifically validated diagnostic tests and treatment choices are currently not available in Ontario, forcing patients to seek these in the U.S.A. and Europe;

WHEREAS, the Canadian Medical Association informed the public, governments, and the medical profession in the May 30, 2000 edition of their professional journal that Lyme Disease is endemic throughout Canada, particularly in Southern Ontario;

WHEREAS, the Ontario Public Health system and the Ontario Health Insurance Plan currently do not fund those specific tests that accurately serve the process for establishing a clinical diagnosis, but only recognize testing procedures known in the medical literature to provide false negatives 45 to 95% of the time;

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to request the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care to direct the Ontario Public Health system and OHIP to include all currently available and scientifically verified tests for Acute and Chronic Lyme Disease in Ontario, and to have everything necessary to create public awareness of Lyme Disease in Ontario, and to have internationally developed diagnostic and successful treatment protocols available to patients and physicians.

    April 19, 2015. As of today our family has pulled two ticks from our house hold residents, this spring alone. One from my 15yr old and one from myself. Plus we’ve counted 20+ crawling on our clothing. In the past two years our house hold has been to emergency rooms 5 times to remove ticks we couldn’t remove our ourselves. Once the ticks are removed the emergency room treatment is different every time depending on the doctors. Sometimes they send the ticks away, sometimes not! Sometimes they give an antibiotic, sometimes not(and yes I’ve heard it all, “the ring”, the “tick is fully engorged”, “it’s the kind of tick that does not carry the disease”).

    We are infested with these things. I feel like we are playing a game of Russian roulette, with ticks! Will the ticks carry the Lyme disease or not?

    Something has to be done.

    This is a nasty, nasty disease and the government should be putting more money into research to find a cure. People are afraid to go out into the country to enjoy the weather, scenery for fear of being bitten. It is so painful for innocent children. The United States have medicines for it, why cannot Canadians.

    Thank you Todd Smith for presenting this petition to the Ontario Legislature! Correct diagnosis of Lyme Disease couldn’t be more needed in this area, as ticks are spreading and biting more every year. It’s a horrible disease, and those requiring treatment deserve everything that is available to them.

    It is time that it is treated as the disease that it is here.
