Lyme Disease Petition

Lyme Disease Treatment

TO the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

WHEREAS, the tick-borne illness known as Chronic Lyme Disease, which mimics many catastrophic illnesses, such as Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn’s, Alzheimer’s, arthritic diabetes, depression, Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia is increasingly endemic in Canada, but scientifically validated diagnostic tests and treatment choices are currently not available in Ontario, forcing patients to seek these in the U.S.A. and Europe;

WHEREAS, the Canadian Medical Association informed the public, governments, and the medical profession in the May 30, 2000 edition of their professional journal that Lyme Disease is endemic throughout Canada, particularly in Southern Ontario;

WHEREAS, the Ontario Public Health system and the Ontario Health Insurance Plan currently do not fund those specific tests that accurately serve the process for establishing a clinical diagnosis, but only recognize testing procedures known in the medical literature to provide false negatives 45 to 95% of the time;

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to request the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care to direct the Ontario Public Health system and OHIP to include all currently available and scientifically verified tests for Acute and Chronic Lyme Disease in Ontario, and to have everything necessary to create public awareness of Lyme Disease in Ontario, and to have internationally developed diagnostic and successful treatment protocols available to patients and physicians.

    This petition describes our family experience exactly. We have a family member who has been diagnosed with the Lyme bacteria and is seeking treatment. Every step of the way has been very challenging. She would be classified as chronic as she has had symptoms for over 10 months. Two negative initial tests here in Ontario sent us in the wrong direction. Finding someone in the medical field here in Ontario who will treat her has been extremely difficult.

    This petition clearly identifies the flawed initial tests and lack of treatment for people suffering with the bacteria longer than the fist month after a bite. Until Doctors in Ontario and Canada are able to recognize more comprehensive tests and acknowledge the reality of persistent Lyme disease, people will continue to become very ill unnecessarily. It is stunning that the Medical community and the Ministry of Health are not catching up. Time is critical.

    I live in Lyme ground zero for Ontario. I know many people in my acquaintance who have had Lyme disease and they were treated in a timely manner only if symptoms were obvious.. I know many more with life altering chronic fatigue or pain who can’t get their symptoms taken seriously. Especially children.

    The ability to access resources for them could be life, joint, sanity and resource saving.

    My son tested positive & treated for Lyme disease 8 years ago in Prince Edward County. He was lucky, we had an amazing doctor. Many in Ontario aren’t so lucky.
