Letter to the Minister of Education About Demonstration Schools

June 27th, 2016

Hon. Mitzie Hunter

Minister of Education

Mowat Block

22nd Flr

900 Bay St

Toronto ON M7A1L2

Dear Minister,

I’m writing you today to follow up on an issue that I, and many people in my riding and across Ontario, raised with your predecessor. Demonstration schools in Ontario provide an invaluable service to their students, to the families who turn them into a province-wide community and to the workers who are helping change lives every time they show up to work.

In March, the Minister visited Sagonaska Demonstration School in Belleville and promised the parents that were assembled that evening that the results of the consultation about the future of those schools would be released before the summer. One of the parents followed up with a concrete date of June 21st – the first full day of summer – and whether the consultation report would be released before that date. They were assured by your predecessor that it would.

It is now June 27th.

No report has been forthcoming regarding what, if anything, the consultation has to say about the future of demonstration schools. Parents are waiting to know what the long term future for demonstration schools will be.

I’m asking you to release the consultation report at the earliest possible date and give these parents some information about their future.

Thank you very much Todd for your continued support.

We do need to hear from the Liberal Government about the Consultations that took place this past spring. I specifically asked if we would hear from the Liberal Government about the report before summer ( June 21st) and Minister Liz Sandals (in front of a few hundred people) said “YES” . The MOE has not given us any information and the reports are overdue.

Teachers, support Staff, parents, students and families who are all directly impacted want to know what these reports state and how the government is going to respond.
