Smith Challenges Minister's Double Standard

September 16, 2015

(QUEEN’S PARK) – Two weeks after a Ministry of Natural Resources expert’s testimony made waves at the ERT hearing in Demorestville, the ripples finally made it to Queen’s Park. Joe Crowley’s testimony that, as the expert herpetologist employed by the Ministry of Natural Resources, he recommended against issuing a Kill, Harm and Harass Permit for Ostrander point was raised by Prince Edward-Hastings MPP, Todd Smith.

I’m writing you today to discuss the revelations from last week at the Environmental Review Tribunal held in the town of Demorestville. While ERTs would not typically be the purview of the Ministry of Natural Resources, evidence has come to light that pertains to previous actions of the Ministry with which I am taking issue today.

Demand Accountability at Hydro One

Mr. Todd Smith: My question is to the Premier this morning. Premier, you’re not only selling Hydro One, you’re keeping Ontario taxpayers in the dark while you do it. Schedule 38 of the budget bill removed Hydro One from the responsibility of disclosing executive salaries in spite of the fact that Hydro One is still in public hands for now. Hydro users that are seeing skyrocketing hydro bills have no idea how much of their bill is actually now going into the wallets of suits at Hydro One.

Premier, shouldn’t taxpayers have the right to know how much they’re paying high-priced hydro executives?

Small Communities Fund in Hastings County

Small Communities Fund in Hastings County

Thursday morning, MPP for Prince Edward - Hastings Todd Smith joined MP Daryl Kramp to announce funding to Small Communities in Hastings County.  Both Stirling-Rawdon and Marmora and Lake received funds to help with local infrastructure projects that the Municipalities have brought to the attention of both the Provincial and Federal Government.

In Stirling - Rawdon, the Small Communities Fund will be used for the rehabilitation of Ridge Road and the installation of roadside safety devices.  This construction will improve traffic flow and safety for both residents and visitors of the Stirling area.

In Marmora and Lake, this funding will be used for the construction of Crawford Drive Watermain and Sanitary Sewer Extension.  This project will benefit more families to be hooked into the water main, as well as improve water pressure .

Helping Fix County Road 3

When I first got elected, getting Rednersville Road fixed became one of my priorities as your MPP and it's still on the white board in my office from my first meeting with Peter Mertens more than three years ago.

Residents of Rednersville Road from Rossmore all the way to Carrying Place have kept this issue at the top of the agenda for me and for their representatives at Shire Hall and I've taken every opportunity I could to press the government to rebuild County Road 3.
After countless questions and letters to the government, I'm proud to announce that the people of Prince Edward County are finally getting the road they deserve. They're getting a ribbon of cement that ties together the people of the County, Belleville and Quinte West. That makes our region stronger and will help grow our population.
County Road 3 is an artery of our local history. In 1798, the Redner family settled in what is now Rednersville. By 1822, the Dempseys had founded Albury just down the road. Roads that intersect with County Road 3 like Weese, Bryant, Dempsey and even Rednersville Road itself bear the names of our earliest settlers making Country Road 3 more than just the gateway to our region. It is the Highway of our history.
